FAQ

Questions Miami homeowners ask.

Straight, factual answers about permits, pruning standards, palms, storms, and how estimates work. If your question is not here, call and ask.

01Permits & Regulations

Do I need a permit to trim my tree in Miami?

Tree pruning in Miami-Dade generally does not require a permit unless more than 25 percent of the live canopy is removed. Routine, standards-based pruning usually stays below that threshold. Tree removal, however, requires a permit for most species.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Miami-Dade?

Yes. Miami-Dade County requires a permit to remove most trees, with limited exemptions for certain species and prohibited invasives. An on-site assessment confirms whether a permit is required, and Subtropical Arborists can prepare the application.

How much of a tree can be legally pruned?

As a horticultural standard, no more than about 25 percent of a tree’s live canopy should be removed in a year, and usually much less. Removing more than 25 percent in Miami-Dade can also trigger permit requirements.

Who is responsible for a tree in the swale?

Swale trees sit in the public right-of-way, and responsibility and permitting for them differ from trees on private property. An arborist can help you determine jurisdiction and what is allowed before any work is done.

02Services & Process

What does an ISA Certified Arborist do?

An ISA Certified Arborist is trained and credentialed in the care of trees, including assessment, pruning to ANSI A300 standards, risk evaluation, and diagnosis. Subtropical Arborists is owned and operated by Benyah Andressohn, ISA Certified Arborist FL-286760A, who performs the work personally.

Can you give me a price from photos?

No. Every quote follows an on-site visit. Photos help prepare and prioritize the visit and can save an unnecessary drive, but they do not replace seeing the tree in person.

How much does tree work cost?

Prices depend on the specific tree, access, and scope, so no prices are published. Estimates are free and provided after an on-site visit.

Should I top my tree?

No. Topping cuts branches back to stubs, starves and stresses the tree, and produces weak, hazardous regrowth. Proper structural pruning or crown reduction is the correct approach, and Subtropical Arborists does not top trees.

Can you assess a potentially dangerous tree?

Yes. A certified arborist can perform an on-site tree risk assessment, evaluate the likelihood and consequence of failure, and recommend pruning, cabling, or removal as appropriate.

03Palms, Storms & Property Type

How often should palm trees be trimmed?

Most South Florida palms need trimming once or twice a year to remove dead fronds and seed pods. Cutting healthy green fronds harms the palm and is not recommended.

Do you provide emergency tree service?

Yes. Subtropical Arborists provides 24/7 emergency and storm response across Miami-Dade County for fallen trees, trees on houses and cars, and hanging or broken limbs.

What should I do if a tree falls during a storm?

Call 911 first if anyone is hurt or a structure is at risk, stay clear of downed power lines, keep people away from the tree, photograph the damage for insurance, and then call a certified arborist for safe removal.

Do you work with commercial properties and HOAs?

Yes. Subtropical Arborists serves residential and commercial clients, including property managers and HOAs, throughout Miami-Dade County.

Can you provide a tree report?

Yes. Subtropical Arborists prepares written arborist reports and tree permit applications as a paid service, separate from free estimates. Most tree companies in Miami do not offer this.
